X Ukrainian World Congress delegates visit
Lonsky Street Prison National Museum and Memorial

On 19 August 2013, delegates to the X Ukrainian World Congress visited the Lonsky Street Prison National Museum and Memorial to the Victims of Occupation Regimes in Lviv, Ukraine.

During a memorial service, officiated by Fr. Stepan Sus, parish priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, participants honored the memory of the many lives lost behind the walls of this prison throughout the 20 th century occupations and repressions.

During a brief program, Ukrainian community leaders from around the world commended the important work of the national museum, which today is a prominent memorial and research institution.

In his address, Ukrainian World Congress President Eugene Czolij stated that the Lonsky Street Prison National Museum serves as an important reminder of the horrors of communism at a time when Ukraine’s governing authorities are deciding whether to go forward on a European path or backward in recreating the Soviet Union or, in today’s terminology, the Eurasian Union.

The UWC is the international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora representing the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians. The UWC has member organizations in 33 countries and ties with Ukrainians in 14 additional countries. Founded in 1967 as a non-profit corporation, the UWC was recognized in 2003 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council as a non-governmental organization (NGO) with special consultative status.
